Our sophomore and junior Daniel P. Haerther Scholars recently participated in the Shedd Aquarium’s annual Immersion event, featuring renowned oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle. The event, hosted by ABC7’s Karen Jordan, also included Shedd President and CEO Dr. Bridget C. Coughlin and Shedd Coral Reef Research Technician Bryce Corbett.

Following the inspiring conversation from the all-female panel, students were encouraged to continue discussing how we can take action to protect our climate. The Haerther Trust provided the scholars copies of Dr. Earle’s book, The World is Blue: How Our Fate and the Ocean’s are One. After reading assigned sections, the scholars met with the Haerther Trustees via Zoom to discuss the readings. Students shared their thoughts on Dr. Earle’s work, why the ocean is so important, and what we can do as a community to better protect the ocean and the animals that call it home.

Out of these discussions, and based on scholar feedback, a service event focused on helping our environment, specifically our waterways, will be planned for next school year for all Haerther Scholars.

Holy Trinity is proud to be one of several Catholic high schools in the Chicagoland area who have scholars supported by the Haerther Trust, including Trinity, Saint Patrick, Brother Rice, Mother McAuley, De La Salle, and DePaul.

We look forward to seeing the steps these scholars will take to help our environment!
