HT Track & Field: Personal Records Highlight Performances at the PSM Westinghouse Invitational

written by Head Coach Stephen Gladden

Despite less-than-ideal running conditions, the Tiger runners used the opportunity to
post four seasonal bests in their signature events. The day started with the Lady Tigers
taking the top spot in the rarely run 800-meter sprint medley relay. The quartet of Jilene
Velazquez, Sunita Pate, Michelle Robinson, and Emaly Lopez moved the baton
around the track in 2:13.25, holding off a fast-charging team from Crane Medical Prep.
Jilene took the momentum from her leadoff leg over to the long jump, leaping out to 15’-
8 ¼” on her last attempt to secure first place. Running her second hurdle race of the
season, Sunita broke the finish line in fourth place with a time of 21.84 seconds and a
new PR. Michelle and Sunita closed out their day with fourth and seventh place finishes
in the half lap sprint event. Collectively, the Lady Tigers finished fifth overall.

On the boys side, Pitias Merach proved his top seeding at 800 meters was not a
misprint, running away from the field in a time of 2:19.61, lowering his PR in the
process. Manasseh Boahene put together his best race of the season at 400-meters,
finishing fourth overall, but more importantly, lowering his personal best to 53.86
seconds, a three second improvement. Viktor Markovych, new to open 400-meter
racing, took the fifth-place spot, circling the oval in 56.98 seconds, establishing a new
PR. The same tandem capped their day with twelfth and thirteenth place finishes in the
200-meter sprint. First year competitor, Denelle Owens, finished ninth in the long jump
with a 3.84-meter jump. The boys team captured tenth place in a field of sixteen.
The next chance to see the Tigers in action will be Saturday, April 26 th at the Walther
Christian Invitational.
